Brigitte Dzogbenuku found her sense of purpose in mentoring. Her own experience as a mentee convinced Brigitte that mentorship can be transformational – so she made it her mission to give young women in Ghana the same opportunity that changed her life. She founded and currently serves as the Executive Director of Mentoring Women Ghana (MWG), which runs mentoring programs that empower young women and girls into leadership and into making a difference in their communities.

Combining sport and mentoring was natural for Brigitte, who’s an avid athlete. She says that some of the greatest lessons in leadership are learned on the court. Her nonprofit includes initiatives like Hoop Sistas, a girls’ basketball club that offers workshops on career development and women’s health. It’s Brigitte’s hope that her mentees eventually become mentors to the rising generation, just like she did.

For 12 years, she was the General Manager of Aviation Social Centre, a fitness and recreational center in Accra, where she introduced various innovative fitness programs and events. In 2011, she founded a recreational facilities management company, which ran the Barclays Clubhouse until September 2015.

Stemming from her leadership and mentoring roles, she recently ran as the Vice-Presidential Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party in Ghana’s 2016 elections and frequently gives presentations on etiquette and manners, and also exercise and wellness to various groups with an emphasis on youth.

She was a coach for the Ghanaian Women’s Social Leadership Program in 2014 and 2015 – a Muheres Por Africa/NYU Wagner Institute program. She is a certified Empowerment Trainer and also serves on the School of Languages Management Committee of the University of Ghana. She won the Fortune/Goldman Sachs Women’s Leadership Award in 2008, after participating in the Vital Voices Fortune/U.S. State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership, and was a VVLead Fellow with Vital Voices in 2013. Brigitte holds a BA in Modern Languages from the University of Ghana, Legon.

She was selected as a Fellow for the first VV Engage Cohort.
