Voices of Resilience: A Conversation with Esra’a Al Shafei

March 2020 – Esra’a Al Shafei is a Bahraini civil rights activist, blogger, senior TED Fellow, and the founder and executive director of Majal, a nonprofit organization amplifying voices of dissent throughout the Middle East and North Africa via digital media. During this time of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Esra’a sits down with Vital Voices President and CEO Alyse Nelson to discuss the health and safety of LGBTQ+ communities during these uneasy times.

During their conversation, Esra’a and Alyse discuss the funding challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has caused non-profits, financial sustainability and uncertainty in hard times such as these, and more. They also talk about how spikes in violence against women and the LGBTQ+ community are seen in times of crisis, as violence against these groups often come from the home and family. They also chatted about the importance of humor and motivation in these hard times, and how humor can be used in leadership to connect, engage, and motivate.
