2025 Fellow,

Valeria Calderón Pérez is a Physical Engineering student from San Vito in Coto Brus, a verdant town hidden in the mountains of southern Costa Rica. She was always very inquisitive growing up and as a young girl studied a range of (mainly artistic) disciplines. Fascinated by the world around her, she turned her curiosity to the sciences, enrolling to study Engineering Physics at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. She formed part of the sixth Engineering Physics graduating class and moved to Cartago Province to pursue her studies. Driven by a strong desire to train as a “humanist scientist”, Valeria has participated in a number of projects and groups related to aeronautics, voluntary work, molecular spectroscopy and, more recently, astrochemistry. This allowed her to learn about a wide range of topics and gain experience that, in 2023, she started to use to help others learn about science through workshops in schools and videos on social media. This soon led to the development of her own project, “Vale Quarks”, which aims to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education in Costa Rica. While leading the project as its president, Valeria is continuing her studies in related areas and hopes to register her project as a non-profit organization. She also aspires to undertake specialized studies once she graduates.
