Kate James

Chair of the Board; Former Chief Corporate Affairs and Global Marketing Officer, Pearson

Kate joined Pearson as Chief Corporate Affairs Officer in January 2014. A member of the Pearson Executive, she oversees communications, marketing and the Pearson Brand, government relations, investor relations and the company’s social impact work.

Before joining Pearson, Kate was Chief Communications Officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation where she ran the foundation’s global communications efforts to raise awareness and build engagement around global poverty, health and US education issues. Kate was responsible for overseeing the communications and brand functions, driving public engagement on the issues the foundation champions, managing reputation risk, and building media partnerships to support independent coverage of critical development and education issues.

Prior to joining the foundation, Kate worked in the financial services industry, most recently at Citibank where she brought the bank’s communications groups together into one global team. Before joining Citibank, she was group head of public affairs for Standard Chartered Bank, where she was responsible for building an integrated approach to government and regulatory relations, and developing the Bank’s sustainability strategy. Kate also served as a director of Standard Chartered Pakistan.

Prior to joining Standard Chartered in March 2004, Kate spent nine years at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) where she held a number of UK and global corporate affairs roles.

A graduate of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Kate supports a number of organizations focused on gender equality and women’s leadership and sits on the board of Vital Voices Global Partnership, dedicated to empowering women in business, civil society and politics around the world, WEDU who invest in women leading change in Asia and America’s Promise Alliance, who bring together hundreds of organizations and ordinary citizens behind the idea of making the promise of America accessible to all young people. Kate is also a director of the Pearson Affordable Learning Fund.  PALF help millions of the world’s poorest children access a high quality education in a cost-effective way.

Kate divides her time between the UK, New York, DC, and Seattle.
