Skateboarding Legend Tony Hawk, Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Human Rights Activist Fallu Sowe and Renowned Artist & Activist Omaid Sharifi to be honored in NYC to commemorate International Human Rights Day 2023

NEW YORK, N.Y. — November 20, 2023 — Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international non-profit dedicated to advancing women leaders, proudly presents the 10th Annual Voices of Solidarity Awards, which will be held at the historic IAC Headquarters in New York City on Monday, December 11 to mark the 75th anniversary of Human Rights Day. Each year, the Voices of Solidarity Awards recognizes remarkable men who have shown courage and compassion in advocating on behalf of women and girls globally. Their efforts aim to end gender-based violence, expand women’s rights, and tip the scales of justice toward gender equality.

Hosted by Philanthropist, Fashion Designer, and Vital Voices Board Member Diane von Furstenberg and IAC Chairman and Business Executive Barry Diller, with support from the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, this inspiring evening brings together the most conscientious and committed individuals, corporations and issue advocates to unite their voices against gender-based inequality.

The 2023 Voices of Solidarity honorees are:

Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) is a champion for care equality who created the US Congressional Dads’ Caucus and advocates for national policies on paid leave, childcare, and gender equality.

Fallu Sowe is a fearless human rights activist who provides survivors critical services and leads cross-sector efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in The Gambia.

Tony Hawk is a dedicated philanthropist and advocate for girls in sport who creates safe, public skateparks for young people in low-income communities across America and around the world.

Omaid Sharifi is a pioneering artist and activist who leads ArtLords, a global grassroots movement founded in Afghanistan to promote peace, women’s rights, and social transformation through street art.

About Vital Voices Global Partnership
Vital Voices Global Partnership was cofounded in 1997 by Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton and the late Secretary Madeleine Albright. Now celebrating 26 years, Vital Voices has directly invested in more than 20,000 women leaders across 185 countries and territories since its inception. Driven by the universal truth that women are the key to progress in their communities and nations cannot move forward without women in leadership positions, Vital Voices has provided early support for leaders who went on to become Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, U.S. Youth Poet Laureates, prime ministers, award-winning innovators, pioneering human rights defenders, and breakthrough social entrepreneurs, including Amanda Gorman and Malala Yousafzai. In an effort to advance and expand this work, in 2022 Vital Voices opened the doors to the world’s first global embassy for women, the Vital Voices Global Headquarters for Women’s Leadership. It is a first-of-its-kind space that allows for convening, innovation, planning, and action—all in the pursuit of serving women leaders who are taking on the world’s greatest challenges.
