Ms. Sanam Sherpa is a dedicated and accomplished leader in Nepal with over a decade of experience in girls’ education and women empowerment. In 2008, she co-founded The Small World (TSW), an organization focused on promoting girls’ education, women empowerment, and sustainable community development in the remote villages of the Everest region. As TSW’s Programs Director, Ms. Sanam successfully manages several key initiatives, including the Mentoring Programs for Adolescent Girls, Child Protect Program, I Am Proud to Be a Girl – a scholarship program for university education- and Seeds of Hope Program for Women’s Income Generation.
Ms. Sanam’s other notable achievements include piloting a washable sanitary pad program and the Weaving for Empowerment program, which employs over 150 women across Solukhumbu. Since 2016, she has also significantly contributed to rural health development in Solukhumbuthrough remote medical missions. Additionally, she coordinates the National Geographic Student Expeditions in Nepal, focusing on teaching younger generations about ethical leadership.
In recognition of her exceptional contribution to girls education and women empowerment in Nepal through TSW, former president of the United States of America, Mr. Barack Obama, met her in Person in July 2023. Ms. Sanam was also named one of the 30 Iconic Nepali Women in March 2023 for her efforts in protecting girls at-risk of abuse, trafficking, and lack of education. She also serves as the Service Co-Chair at the Rotary Club of Kathmandu Heights for the 2022-2023 Rotary year in District 3292 Nepal-Bhutan.
Her commitment to empowering girls and women has made a significant impact on their lives through education, employment, and healthcare. Her inspiration comes from a kind gesture she received 30 years ago when a traveler sponsored her education; She is now paying that kindness forward.
