About Olufunto

Olufunto is the Founder and CEO of Chanja Datti, a waste collection and recycling social enterprise started in Northern Nigeria, a region of the country that has been particularly unstable experiencing religious extremism and terrorism and with high levels of gender inequality. Chanja Datti strategically approached solving these issues in the region by providing a platform through which cash can be exchanged for trash, while also working to empower unemployed women and at-risk youth in the region. The company collects waste plastic (PET bottles, film, nylon etc.) and other recyclables like aluminum cans, papers (old newspapers, cartons etc.), hard plastic (gallons, broken chairs etc.), and transforms them into pellets, flakes or bales, which are then supplied to off-takers/recyclers for use in the manufacture of various products. This work is done in accordance with environmental sustainability and SDGs enlightenment campaigns across communities and educational and religious institutions with a particular focus on the 3Rs: Reuse, Recycle and Reduce. Since Chanja Datti was established 4.5 years ago, they have been directly responsible for diverting 3,000,000 kg of recyclable waste from landfills in the Abuja metropolis. They have been able to do this by creating 200 green jobs and recently expanded their manufacturing capabilities, allowing them to recycle 10 tons of plastic film per month into recycled resins for production of recycled poly bags and construction materials. Olufunto holds a Masters in Financial Management from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business in New York and a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance from Northeastern University in Boston where she graduated cum laude.

What Olufunto hopes to gain from the VV GROW Fellowship:

Olufunto additionally wants to explore ways she can further give back and sees herself paying forward what she learned to future VV GROW fellows.

What Olufunto can offer other fellows:

Olufunto can offer her insight and her unique experiences. She is a Cherie Blair mentor and she has found that her ability to build networks and connect has served her well. She wants to share that ability with others.
