Youth & Girls Empowerment

Mercyline Tata is the Founder of Green Roots Empowerment Initiative, a youth-led initiative based in rural Busia County, Kenya. After distributing sanitary pads to over 500 girls, she saw the limitations of one-time donations and envisioned a more sustainable path. Tata is now preparing to launch EmpowerPads & Green Futures, a project that installs recycled pad-sharing boxes in schools and trains girls to run their tree nurseries. The seedlings will be sold to fund pad supplies, creating a cycle where girls protect their dignity while planting the roots of their future.

Tata holds a Bachelor’s in Linguistics, Media and Communication from Moi University. She works with PlantVillage, helping rural farmers adapt to climate change using smart tools and local knowledge. Her work spans villages, farms, and schools, where she’s seen both the weight of inequity and the power of youth-led solutions.

“As a visionary leader, I’m planting systems that let girls grow not just in class, but in leadership, resilience, and self-worth.”
