Honorable Majala Mlagui is the elected deputy governor of the County Government of Taita Taveta, one of the 47 regional governments in Kenya. Majala first entered the political scene during the national elections in 2017, when she ran on a platform based on young, development-focused leadership and youth and women’s empowerment.

Prior to entering politics, Majala ran a social impact company that empowered rural artisanal miners in East Africa by helping them create sustainable livelihoods through responsible mining, ethical sourcing and access to fair-trade markets. Majala also provided consulting services on extractive governance and policy issues related to artisanal and small-scale mining to development and governmental agencies.

She is an alumnus of the 2014 Emerging Leaders in Africa Mining program run by the Minerals and Energy for Development Alliance (MEfDA, Australia), an Acumen 2013 East Africa Regional Fellow, a TED Fellow, and sat in the African Union Technical Working Group for the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV). Majala received her Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from University of Sheffield in England and is a certified PRINCE 2 Project Manager.

She was selected as a Fellow for the first VV Engage Cohort.
