Herself a survivor of human trafficking, Chari Maya Tamang has devoted her life’s work to advocating for the protection of other human trafficking survivors. Showing incredible strength and resilience, Ms. Tamang became the first survivor in Nepal to file a case against her trafficker, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In 1996, Ms. Tamang joined other trafficking survivors to found Shakti Samuha, Nepal’s first survivor-established and run organization, which empowers returning trafficking survivors by providing shelter, legal aid, vocational training and counseling. Ms. Tamang has been with the organization since its inception and currently serves as a program coordinator of Shakti Samuha, where her passion for social justice combined with her personal expertise on the issue allow her to positively impact the lives of other survivors of sex trafficking both on a local and national level.
