This morning, UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet addressed a group of grassroots activist women on her goals for the organization.  She highlighted her desire to create a mechanism for women and activists to be able to contact the organization directly to share the needs and progress of women from around the world, as well as the need for increased financial support for UN Women in order to make it sustainable.

In a parallel event at the UN Headquarters with global youth leaders on Gender Equality and New Technologies, young activists from around the world shared stories about the ways new technology changed the course of their lives and their political regimes, particularly recently in the Middle East and North Africa.  They also addressed the impact of technological advances on the empowerment of young women in their countries and the role that men and boys have in promoting the gender agenda.

Other NGO parallel events today included sessions on the importance of NGOs to advocate for women in their societies and their rights under international law to exist, as well as alternative teaching methods to empower women and girls in local communities.
