Honduras Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence
JUNE 2019 – In early June, Vital Voices headed to San Pedro Sula, Honduras for the Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence.
In collaboration with local experts from within the criminal justice system and from civil society, Vital Voices trained over 40 professionals working to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), including national and municipal-level judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement officials, victim advocates, and service providers.
Using case scenarios tailored to the unique context of GBV in San Pedro Sula, including GBV perpetrated by gang members or in underserved, gang-controlled neighborhoods, participants worked together to discuss how to investigate and prosecute GBV cases in a holistic way that focuses on victim safety and offender accountability.
Participants in the Justice Institute were able to discuss common challenges and potential solutions with their multi-disciplinary peer. They shared that they are now better positioned to develop a holistic response to GBV.
Our team celebrated the successful completion of the Institute by welcoming a group of traditional Honduran folk dancers who sang in English, Spanish, and Garífuna!
Justice Institutes on Gender-Based Violence are interactive training programs that promote a holistic response – focused on victim safety and offender accountability – to addressing violence against women.
