August 2020 – Cynthia Richie Terrell is founder and executive director of Represent Women, an organization that advocates for rules and systems to advance women’s leadership in the United States. When Represent Women began, the United States ranked 103rd globally for women’s representation in government. Now, the United States ranks 82nd in women’s representation. Through a combination of research, education, and strategic partnerships, Represent Women pursues one major goal: a truly representative democracy.

On the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, Cynthia joined Vital Voices President and CEO Alyse Nelson on the Vital Voices podcast to discuss what a representative democracy looks like, as well as routes for achieving that vision.

Cynthia highlights the advantages of ranked-choice voting and voluntary targets for PACs, as well as an assortment of system interventions proven to create more opportunities for women. In this podcast, Cynthia gives a passionate call to action that not only emphasizes the shortcomings of hegemonic political structures but celebrates the achievements of women who have benefitted from changes to such structures.
