A former member of the Federal Communications Commission, Susan Ness is the head of Susan Ness Strategies, a communications policy consulting firm. She is a Distinguished Fellow at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania (APPC), where she convened and co-chaired the Transatlantic High Level Working Group on Moderation of Content Online and Freedom of Expression. Ms Ness also is a Distinguished Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, where she works on transatlantic digital policy issues.  She currently serves on the board of directors of TEGNA Inc, an NYSE-listed media company.

Ms. Ness was a member of the US Federal Communications Commission from 1994 to 2001, where she played a leading role in advancing new digital technologies, spectrum policy, and competition.  From 2010 to 2018, she was a senior fellow at the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations (Johns Hopkins University), where she focused on transatlantic digital issues, and convened the SAIS Global Conference on Women in the Boardroom, shining a spotlight on global efforts to advance women’s corporate leadership. Previously, she was founder and CEO of GreenStone Media, which produced talk radio programming for women, and was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication. She was a Member of the 2016 Maryland Presidential Electoral College, and in 2008, she co-led the Federal Trade Commission review team for the Obama Presidential Transition.

Ms. Ness earned an M.B.A from the Wharton School, a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School, and a B.A. from Douglass College (Rutgers University).
