Digital Communications/Events Intern

Today, Vital Voices has a staff of nearly 60 headquartered in Washington, DC. In the coming years we have a bold vision to dramatically scale our impact. In early 2022 we will be opening the first ever Global Headquarters for Women’s Leadership, a 30,000+ sq. ft. historic building just blocks from the White House on 16th Street. It will be a hub of activity, events and collaborations — bringing together women leaders and their allies to tackle the world’s greatest challenges.  

Position Description: 

The Vital Voices team is seeking a motivated intern who will support the Communications team and promote the organization’s image and thought leadership through our online channels and social media; extend its reach and cultivate supporters; provide event support; support ongoing and event-driven media relations and fundraising activities; support the amplification of women leaders in our Global Leadership Network; and promote all regional and issue-area programmatic activities. This position reports to the Digital Communications Coordinator. The Internwill work across a portfolio of projects alongside and learning from cross-functional teams with leaders and peers with varying backgrounds, education, and experiences.   

We are accepting interns on either a full-time or part time basis. The internship requires a commitment of 40 hours per week for full-time interns or 20 hours a week for part-time interns. Students will receive a stipend of $1000 per month for full time interns or $500 per month for part time interns and/or may receive academic credit for their experience in cooperation with their university.  We are currently accepting applications for the Fall semester. Fall internships will run from September 7 through mid-December.  All interns will be working remotely for the Fall semester.  Applications for the Fall internship should be submitted by August 15 at 11:59pm EDT.

Responsibilities: 

  • Engagement Opportunities: Supporting the Senior Events Manager in preparing for and planning organizational events; including webinar coordination, Zoom registration, webinar production, and other support using other communication technology and software.
  • Social Media Management: Draft and posting social media content  
  • Website Coordination: Assist with minor web edits through WordPress platform 
  • Media Relations Support: Track and monitor media and news 
  • External Communications: Contribute to blog, e-newsletter and other online communications projects 
  • Research and content planning 
  • Other related duties as assigned  

Qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with a concentration in communications, journalism or public relations, international relations, women’s rights or similar degree; 
  • Interest in and knowledge of global women’s issues, international development, and/or women’s leadership  
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail  
  • Highly organized and ability to manage multiple projects at the same time; 
  • Strong communication skills, including written and oral communications; 
  • Prior experience with Zoom and other virtual event platforms desirable;  
  • Prior experience with planning and executing in-person, hybrid, and virtual events desirable 
  • Design skills, including Photoshop, Canva and PowerPoint are preferred but not required 
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines; and 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, as well as social media channels and research databases.
