Power to Empower: Christine Lagarde on Being the First, but Not the Last

October 2020 – Christine Lagarde is the President of the European Central Bank, chair of the European Systemic Risk Board, and former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. Her trailblazing career in European economics is as successful as it is diverse, spanning multiple countries and a plethora of political sectors. As the first woman to manage the IMF, the first woman finance minister of France, and now, the first woman President of European Central Bank, President Lagarde is no stranger to high expectations.

President Lagarde sat down with Vital Voices President and CEO, Alyse Nelson, to discuss the “superb importance” of using one’s platform as a woman leader. As head of the European Central Bank, President Lagarde also shares her experiences of humility in leading the European economy through the Covid-19 pandemic. In discussing the ways we can contribute to a future in which women are economically empowered, President Lagarde gives straightforward advice to women and girls: “dare for difference, take risks, and have no regrets even if it falls apart”.
