Summit launches Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women
The Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women was launched on International Women’s Day in March 2010 during a global summit hosted by founding partners Vital Voices, the Avon Foundation for Women and the U.S. Department of State.
Delegations of experts from 15 countries were convened in Washington, D.C. for the summit, which focused on creating public-private partnerships to end violence against women. The 125 participants represented business, government, law enforcement, the NGO community, media and academia. They came together to share expertise, develop innovative solutions, leverage new partnerships and create a global action plan to end gender-based violence.
Avon CEO Andrea Jung, actress and Avon Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon, senior government officials, and members of Vital Voices’ Global Network gathered at the U.S. State Department for the official launch on March 10, 2010.
The three-day summit addressed the most pervasive forms of violence against women: domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Delegates engaged in working group sessions and panel discussions facilitated by leading journalists.
An advocacy toolkit, developed by Vital Voices, was distributed to delegates. The toolkit offers practical strategies for developing an advocacy campaign to end violence against women.
