Xie Lihua

Asia and the Pacific Islands Human Rights
Global Leadership Awards

As the founder of Rural Women Knowing All magazine and Secretary General of the Development Center for Rural Women, Xie Lihua is a powerful advocate for millions of rural women across China. Her commitment to women’s literacy began in the early 1990s on a trip to promote her new magazine. But the number of illiterate village women alarmed Xie, and spurred her to action. 

She has since established a number of initiatives to educate these women and countless others like them: a migrant women’s club for city workers; a nonprofit school for rural women and girls, a domestic workers’ support network, and a rural women’s suicide prevention program. Through literacy training, gender awareness education and microcredit, she is empowering women with the tools they need to improve their lives.
