Swati Chauhan

Asia Summit, Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women Asia and the Pacific Islands Human Rights

Judge Swati Chauhan is the magistrate of Mumbai's specialized court for cases under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.

In this role, she is committed to ending sex trafficking in Mumbai by adjudicating individual cases before her, and by showing the police linkages between cases which have led to arrests of trafficking kingpins. Her convictions against traffickers have proven the critical value of anti-trafficking courts and serve as a model for the rest of her country, her region, and the world.

Judge Chauhan has earned international recognition for her work, and she participates in many national and state anti-human trafficking conferences. In 2011, she was named a "TIP Report Hero" in the U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report.

"A threat to women anywhere is a threat to women everywhere," says Judge Chauhan. "That's why I'm proud to be a part of Vital Voices and their commitment to ending trafficking and violence against women worldwide."
