Born and raised in South Sudan, Awut Deng Acuil is all too familiar with national conflict and personal loss — including the death of her husband. In Africa’s largest country, famine, gunfire and corruption are rife. Yet Awut has met this ruthless war with a steadfast commitment to peace. 

An expert trainer on conflict resolution, she leads one of Sudan’s most successful conflict mitigation organizations. She is helping to sustain a grassroots network hungry for peace. Her humanity has inspired people-to-people peace processes that bridge tribal divides in the Bahr El Ghazal and Upper Nile regions.

Awut also helped start the Sudanese Women Association in Nairobi and the Sudanese Women Voice for Peace. Throughout her life of activism, she has championed women’s participation in charting Sudan’s future.
